Wire Fraud Prevention
Staying Safe During the Buying Process
Large money transfers like those that happen when you buy property, unfortunately, attract the attention of fraudsters. Schemes often begin by using email, phone calls or phony website forms to steal your information and access your money. Thankfully, we have many safety nets in place and are always ready to help you discern threats from legitimate communications.
We do everything we can to protect you from wire fraud, but we can’t do it alone.
You can protect yourself and your money by following these steps:
Call, don’t email.
Confirm wiring instructions by phone, using a known number or a number from our website, before transferring funds. Never use a phone number or click links from an email.
Forward, don’t reply.
When responding to an email, hit forward instead of reply and start typing their name. This ensures that you are emailing the correct person and not a false or hidden email.
Be suspicious.
It is highly uncommon for us to change wiring instructions and payment information via email. If you receive an email that just doesn’t feel right, pick up the phone and give us a call. Again, just make sure you don’t call the number provided on the email.
